Wendell Castle was born in 1932 in Kansas, and specializes in hand-crafted sculpture and furniture. He is well known for his amazing craftsmanship and quality, as well as his original design techniques. His most iconic works are created from wood and gel-coated fiberglass in the 60's and 70's. He received his BFA from KU in industrial design, and an MFA in sculpture, finishing school in 1961. His next step was Rochester, New York, where he taught at the School of American Craftsmen and created a permanent studio. He has received many awards including the 'Visionaries of the American Craft Movement' Award (1994), a Gold Medal from the American Craft Council (1997), and a Modernism Lifetime Achievement Award from the Brooklyn Museum (2007). He has works at the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Renwick Gallery in Washington D. C., among others.
