What Do I Think of When Someone Says "Good Wayfinding"?

A zoo. That's right, you heard me, a zoo. Zoos have some of the greatest wayfinding systems of all time, because their audiences are children, so they pick things that the mind recognizes quickly. Bright colors, pictures instead of words, and large arrows pointing the way to such main attractions as the Polar Bears, or Lions.

So the idea is that by incorporating these things into wayfinding for all people, we can make directions much less of a headache. People like to insist upon professional looking signs that are designed entirely for aesthetic, but not function. If we combine the aesthetic appeal with fluid functioning, Viola! Perfect world. Okay, maybe not a perfect world, but definitely a better one. Slightly.
